Fans won't be getting any early samples of Arctic Monkey's upcoming sixth studio album.  Frontman Alex Turner says there will be no advance singles from Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, which is due May 11.

Turner told Mojo (via Pitchfork) that this wasn't his idea. Instead, it was put forward by Arctic Monkeys guitarist Jamie Cook. "Jamie was really keen on that idea, and I guess people at Domino [Records]," Turner said. "But it didn't come from me. I understand it, I think."

Cook has already revealed that Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino is "not typically what we'd do," compounding the mystery surrounding the first Arctic Monkeys release since 2013's platinum-selling AM.

Apparently a bout of writer's block when it came to Arctic Monkeys songs is to blame for the lengthy span between studio projects. "I have to find ways to trick myself into writing songs – but this time, I’d run out of tricks," Turner told Mojo (via RTE). "I was lost and didn’t really have any ideas about what I was going to do." Turner's side project, the Last Shadow Puppets, released an album in 2016.

The gift of a piano finally broke the logjam, but it also presented a new conundrum: Turner said he wasn't sure if what he came up with qualified as an Arctic Monkeys album, but Cook finally convinced him. The piano "gave me permission to go somewhere I'd had trouble getting to before," Turner admitted. "It allowed me to put across how I feel more, more ... broadly than before."

Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino – which apparently begins with the line "I just wanted to be one of the Strokes" – will be accompanied by a string of North American shows, including nine newly announced October dates.
