What Are Rock’s Most Shocking Album Covers?

Being proudly provocative has always been part of rock ‘n’ roll — from the music’s earliest days, when simply shaking one’s hips on television was enough to send middle-aged Americans into a righteous lather, the formula for some of the best rock has been one part rhythm, one part volume, and one part shock.

This has also been true for album covers, which some of rock’s most forward-thinking performers have used as a platform to shock, disturb, annoy, and generate thought-provoking conversation (although not necessarily in that order). It’s a long rock ‘n’ roll tradition — one celebrated with a new list over at Ultimate Classic Rock (WARNING NSFW.)

Loverboy Plots Comeback with New Single, ‘Heartbreaker’ [VIDEO]

They’ve been out of the limelight for awhile, but Canadian rockers Loverboy — whose string of ’80s hits included ‘Working for the Weekend’ and ‘Turn Me Loose’ — are on the comeback trail.

The band convened recently to record a new single, ‘Heartbreaker,’ with Bob Rock, the producer who was behind the boards for their biggest hits. Although it doesn’t look like a full-length album is in the cards anytime soon, singer Mike Reno says he’s lovin’ every minute of life in Loverboy.

Alice Cooper Plans Deluxe Edition of His New Sequel Album, ‘Welcome 2 My Nightmare’

It’s always hard for a sequel to recapture the excitement of whatever made the original great, but give Alice Cooper credit — he’s doing whatever he can to convince fans that his upcoming album, a sequel to his classic ‘Welcome to My Nightmare,’ is something special.

Cooper reunited with the original Alice Cooper Band for a few tracks on the new ‘Nightmare’ and even enlisted his old producer, Bob Ezrin. If that wasn’t enough, he’ll also release a deluxe “fanpack” edition of the sequel, titled ‘Welcome 2 My Nightmare,’ that packs in a boatload of extras.

Bruce Springsteen Is the Inspiration for Superman’s New ‘Contemporary’ Comic Book Look

Tom Petty Demands Michele Bachmann’s Campaign Stop Using ‘American Girl’

Michele Bachmann has now been told by Tom Petty that his song ‘American Girl’ is off limits for her presidential campaign.

Petty’s outspoken protectiveness of his music is certainly nothing new — in the ’80s, he engaged in a protracted public legal battle with his former label, MCA, over rising record prices, and more recently, he asked the Bush campaign to refrain from using his songs at campaign events.

Linkin Park Plays Unique Cover of Adele’s ‘Rolling in the Deep’ [VIDEO]

With 3.5 million copies sold and chart-topping radio play around the world, Adele’s ‘Rolling in the Deep’ is arguably the song of 2011. You just can’t escape it these days — not even if you’re in the audience for a Linkin Park concert.

At a recent fan club show, band members Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda unveiled their unplugged version of ‘Rolling in the Deep,’ stripping it down to acoustic guitar and vocals. It offered not only a new take on the song, but a rarely seen side of Linkin Park, a band that has sold more than 50 million units (and won a pair of Grammys) on the strength of its loud, rap-tinged brand of rock.

Nirvana Bandmates Reunite Behind Closed Doors

Take three former members of Nirvana, put them together on a stage with their instruments and a stack of amps, and what do you get? The rock ‘n’ roll reunion of the decade — albeit one that played only briefly, and for an audience of one.

It all happened when lead Foo Fighter and former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl invited his old compadre, bassist Krist Novoselic, to come out for a Foos show. During pre-concert rehearsals, as the two were warming up with Foo Fighters/ex-Nirvana guitarist Pat Smear, Grohl realized something special was about to happen.

Did Red Wine Kill Jimi Hendrix?

When you think of dangerous rock ‘n’ roll substances, red wine probably isn’t even on the list. But according to a friend of Jimi Hendrix, it may have been the cause of the guitar legend’s death.

In an interview with the UK’s Daily Mail, Meic Stevens recounted the last night of Hendrix’s life, saying he “was drinking lager or some kind of beer and he just poured the wine in to the pint glass. I don’t think he had ever drunk red wine before — he didn’t know how to drink it. He seemed okay. He seemed to be alright. But the next day I woke up late and somebody phoned and said Jimi’s dead. Apparently he choked on his own vomit.”
