Legendary R&B singer Bobby Womack passed away Friday night at the age of 70, according to CNN. Womack’s publicist announced the news through a statement released to the press.

The cause of death is unknown at the moment although last year, Womack revealed that he was suffering from the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.

Womack started out as a young gospel singer with his four brothers in the Cleveland, Ohio area. In 1953, the Womack Brothers met Soul Stirrers lead singer Sam Cooke.

The Womack Brothers changed their name to the Valentinos, and Cooke signed them to his SAR Records label. The Valentinos had their first hit in the song ‘Lookin’ for a Love.’

In 1964, the Rolling Stones covered Womack’s song ‘It’s All Over Now’ and scored their first No. 1 hit in the United States. This lead the path for Womack to branch into his own solo act.

Three years later, Womack released his first single ‘Trust Me.’ In 1972, the track ‘Across 110th Street’ became one of his biggest solo hits, which would later be used in the opening credits of the 1997 film ‘Jackie Brown.’

In 2009, Womack was formally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
