Charles Aaron “Bubba” Smith, who was a feared defense end for the Baltimore Colts and found a Hollywood career in retirement, was found dead at his home on Wednesday. He was 66. The cause of death has not yet been announced.

Perhaps best known for his role as Lt. Moses Hightower in the ‘Police Academy’ film series, the 6-foot-7 Smith was the number one overall pick in the 1967 National Football League draft and played nine seasons in the NFL.He was a fan favorite during his time playing at Michigan State. Former Spartans coach and athletic director George Perles, who wasn’t on campus when Smith played there, said he was a beloved figure, noting, “The students started the ‘Kill, Bubba, Kill,’ chants. The kids loved him. They had buttons, signs, everything.”

Smith, whose number 95 jersey was retired by Michigan State in 2006, was inducted into College Football Hall of Fame in 1988.
