Butte’s Copper King Hotel Closing

BUTTE, Mont. (AP) — The Copper King Hotel and Convention Center in Butte is closing Sunday night, putting 50 people out of work.

Sales director Marilyn Polich confirmed the closure of the hotel, bar and restaurant to The Montana Standard (http://bit.ly/1eyU0Fq) on Tuesday.

Owner Ken Burningham of Seattle did not return phone calls to the newspaper seeking comment.

Burningham has been trying to sell the hotel at least since 2008, when it was listed at $6 million.

Butte Local Development Corp. Director Jim Smitham said Burningham now wants a little over $2 million.

The Copper King closed in October 2008, putting 75 people out of work. Burningham talked about demolishing it in 2009, but found the cost would be too high. A group of investors re-opened the hotel in 2010, but Burningham took back ownership when their financing fell through.
