The Decemberists made their previously announced visit to the town of Springfield on the Fox animated comedy 'The Simpsons' last night. The group sat in as the elementary school's new music teachers in an episode about the town becoming hipper when a couple -- played by 'Portlandia' stars Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein -- moves in from Portland with a pretentious son (comedian Patton Oswalt) in tow.

Homer, of course, responds by trying to become hipper himself, leading to all sorts of comic situations. Decemberists frontman Colin Meloy announced plans for the appearance back in August, tweeting the above picture of the band in cartoon form -- which perfectly captures the folk-rock quintet in all of its well-dressed, bespectacled glory. The episode, titled ‘The Day the Earth Stood Cool,' was originally supposed to air on Dec. 2 but was pushed back one week for whatever reason.

Watch a snippet of the band in the trailer post above. "Class, say hello to your new music teachers, the Decemberists," teacher Edna Krabappel says in the clip, to which Meloy responds, "Now who wants to learn a song about press gangs and infanticide?"

Comic genius!
