Dr. Jack Kevorkian, the controversial supporter of assisted suicide, died this morning at a hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan. He was 83.

Kevorkian, known as “Dr. Death,” had been suffering from kidney and heart problems. He appeared to die after he experienced a pulmonary thrombosis, according to his lawyer, Mayer Morganroth. Morganroth said of his passing, “It was peaceful, he didn’t feel a thing.”

Morganroth also said there were no artificial efforts made to keep Kevorkian alive and there are no plans to hold a memorial.

Kevorkian, who first admitted assisting suicide in 1990, said he was on hand for about 130 suicides.

He made waves in a ’60 Minutes’ interview when footage of him assisting in a suicide was broadcast. He wound up convicted of second degree murder and received 10-25 years in jail in 1999. He was freed after eight years and removed from parole in 2009.

Kevorkian’s compelling and controversial methods were documented in the 2010 HBO movie ‘You Don’t Know Jack,’ starring Al Pacino in what turned out to be an Emmy-winning performance.
