Drive-By Truckers will release American Band, their 11th studio album, Sept. 30 on ATO Records. The Georgian group — celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2016 — revealed the lead single, "Surrender Under Protest," on NPR.

American Band aims to address the current cultural tumult and political upheaval in the United States, according to a press release. Song titles such as "Guns of Umpqua" and "Ramon Casiano" offer solidarity to those killed by gunfire.

"(T)hese songs are mostly set front and center in the current political arena with songs dealing with our racial and cultural divisions, gun violence, mass shootings and political assholery," frontman Patterson Hood says in the press release. "'American Band'" is a rock and roll call to arms as well as a musical reset button for our band and the country we live in."

Hood hit the reset button on his own life when he relocated from Athens, Ga., to Portland, Ore. "Surrender Under Protest" mixes the Truckers' signature Southern sound with the bucolic timbre of the Pacific Northwest.

Drive-By Truckers will embark on the Darken the Flags tour in summer 2016, with dates listed below. Hood and band mates Jay Gonzalez (keys) and Mike Cooley (vocals, guitar) have also launched individual tours lasting through Aug. 12.
