Additional Information

The newly formed Lewis and Clark Caverns Association are looking to engage the public and recruit volunteers. On Thursday, March 26 at the Bozeman Public Library Community Room, the association will host a 7 p.m. program, ‘Stories in Stone’ presented by Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park Ranger, Tom Forwood. The presentation highlights the natural history, flora and fauna of the area and brings the park to the public.

Bozeman is the final destination out of a three-stop tour around southwest Montana. The association is hosting these events to not only highlight the park but also bring attention to the association itself. In it’s first year as a friend’s group for the caverns the association has become involved with Our Montana, a Montana non-profit organization that preserves the scenic, historic, archaeological, scientific and recreational resources of Montana's Parks, Rivers, Historic Sites and Trails. Through work with Our Montana, the Lewis and Clark Caverns Association has become a subset of Our Montana and gained non-profit status, allowing the friends group to achieve more.

The association has hit the ground running and has a number of activities already planned for this summer, which will be discussed in detail at the presentation. First, on Sunday, June 7 the group is hosting a geocaching event at Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park. The event will be free and open to the public from beginners to experts. There will be more information soon to come about how to register.

Also the association for the first time is excited to host free two-day camps for children in grades 4 – 7. The camps will engage youth in Montana’s outdoors, offering programs such as atlatl throwing, birding, astronomy, and much more. The camps will be completely free of charge and will be available in June and July. Participation is limited and more information will be available soon.

These and many other activities are occurring throughout the year at Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park and the friends group could not do it without local support and help. We are looking for volunteers to help us with our many projects, or those wanting to serve on the board.
