Additional Information

The Extreme History Project and the Museum of the Rockies will host Humanities Montana Speakers Bureau program “I Do: A Cultural History of Montana Weddings” with Martha Kohl on May 29, 2014. The program will be in the Hager Auditorium at the Museum of the Rockies at 6pm. The presentation is free and open to the public. Partial funding for the Speakers Bureau program is provided by a legislative grant from Montana’s Cultural Trust.

Kohl uses wedding stories to offer a glimpse into life on the frontier—from the buffalo hump served at sheriff-outlaw Henry Plummer’s wedding in Sun River in 1863 to the live chickens celebrants released in the home of newlyweds near Malta in 1920. She sheds new light on the values and experiences of ordinary Montanans and encourages audience members to share their own personal or family stories about getting married in Montana.

Kohl, of Helena, Mont., is a historical specialist at the Montana Historical Society and the author of the book I Do: A Cultural History of Montana Weddings, which explores a ritual that is both deeply personal and thoroughly influenced by cultural forces.
