Foo Fighters and Kurt Cobain are known for making great music, but in 2015 both were involved in some great television as well. As such, both Foo Fighters' Sonic Highways series and the Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heckdocumentary found themselves receiving Emmy nominations on Thursday (July 16).

Last fall, Foo Fighters put together an eight-part documentary series for HBO called Sonic Highways, which not only offered an account of the recording of their latest album, but also gave an in-depth look at some of the greatest music scenes in America through the eyes of those who helped create it. On Thursday, the band was rewarded with two Emmy nominations -- one for Outstanding Sound Mixing for Nonfiction Programming and the other for Outstanding Informational Series or Special.

Meanwhile, the highly anticipated Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck arrived on HBO this spring after several film festival and theatrical screenings prior. The Brett Morgen-directed film, which helped give a closer look at the late Nirvana singer's life via his own audio and film recordings and accounts from those closest to him, received five Emmy nominations. The film is up for Outstanding Sound Mixing for Nonfiction Programming (against Foo Fighters' Sonic Highway), Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special, Outstanding Cinematography for Nonfiction Programming, Outstanding Picture Editing for Nonfiction Programming and Outstanding Writing for Nonfiction Programming.

The Emmy winners will be announced during a Sept. 27 ceremony. For a more extensive look at the nominees for this year's Emmys, check out ScreenCrush's coverage here.
