Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong Writing Music for Yale’s Shakespearian Theater Production
Green Day‘s Billie Joe Armstrong has definitely been bitten by the theater bug. The musician first saw success with the adaptation of Green Day’s ‘American Idiot’ for the stage and now he’s turned his attention to writing songs for another theatrical production.
The New York Times reports that Armstrong has been working on music for the Yale Repertory Theater production of ‘These Paper Bullets,’ a rock and roll update of Shakespeare’s ‘Much Ado About Nothing.’ The production is set to make its world premiere in March 2014.
The play has been adapted by Rolin Jones and will be directed by Jackson Gay. It centers on a band from Liverpool dealing with romance and the music industry in London.
Armstrong not only wrote the music that ‘American Idiot’ was based on, but he also took an active role in the production, appearing as the ‘St. Jimmy’ character on multiple occasions during the Broadway run.
The frontman completed a stint in rehab earlier this year and he recently rejoined Green Day on tour in support of their 2012 album trilogy. The band is in Austin today (March 15) for South by Southwest, where their ‘Cuatro’ and ‘Broadway Idiot’ documentaries are screening and the band is also playing a set.
