Joe Satriani has released a new song, “Thunder High on the Mountain,” from his upcoming album, What Happens Next.  The track, like the rest of the album, features Glenn Hughes on bass and Chad Smith on drums. It will be released on Jan. 12. You can listen to “Thunder High on the Mountain" above.

Satriani recently explained that despite the potential risks in recruiting Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Black Country Communion member Hughes and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Smith for the project, there were no struggles for dominance in the studio. “I couldn’t have picked a better rhythm section,” he said. “You know when you’ve got three guys recording, everybody’s the star? That’s what I got, and I’m so happy.” He described the result as a “celebration of rock, soul and groove.”

According to a press release for the upcoming LP, “These new tracks literally vibrate the soul with an energy rarely found these days. From the dynamic opening track, ‘Energy’, to the majestic crunch of ‘Thunder High on the Mountain’, and the easy, sensual cords of ‘Smooth Soul.’ This unparalleled rock-rhythm section gives What Happens Next a depth of groove that sets it apart from Satriani’s other work.”

The album marks a return collaboration between Satriani and Smith, who are both members of the supergroup Chickenfoot. That band hasn't performed in more than a year, but the guitarist recently said he was “feeling very positive” about a reunion sometime next year.
