Anyone who tells you spelling isn't important is wrong.

On Wednesday night's 'Jeopardy!' -- which is currently in the middle of Kids Week -- a boy who knew the correct answer was not given credit because of a spelling error.

The clue? "Abraham Lincoln called this document, which took effect in 1863, 'a fit and necessary war measure.'"

The answer? The Emancipation Proclamation. Eighth-grader Thomas Hurley knew it, but wrote "Emanciptation Proclamation." Even though it was obvious he knew the answer, producers said he was wrong because he made a spelling mistake.

Skyler, the boy who was in the lead, decided to make an enormous wager and nearly doubled his winnings, so Thomas wouldn't have won, anyway, but, come on -- this was harsh. Had the boy in the lead guessed wrong, Thomas could've had even more reason to be angry.

And if you want to feel even worse for Thomas, here's a sobering fact: he's from Newtown, Connecticut.
