J.K. Simmons, a former Missoulian, won the Golden Globe award for Best Supporting Actor in a motion picture for Whiplash.

Simmons, also an alum from the University of Montana, walked away with the honors at the The 72nd annual Golden Globes in Beverly Hills, with hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

It is rumored that Simmons is also a top contender in the Oscars for the same category.

The film Whiplash was distributed in limited release and tells the story of a music instructor who will stop at nothing to realize a music student's potential.

Simmons is from Ohio, and his parents, Don and Pat, moved to Missoula decades ago when his dad Don accepted a position in the UM School of Music.
