I've been pondering this question as of late and doing a little research to help find an answer. I almost wish I didn't open Pandora's music box. I love all kinds of music and picking one year in history that had the most to offer has proved too difficult. There's too many! Here's what I narrowed it down to.

I have always, ever since I can remember, loved all kinds of music. I was the kid who loved hip hop and rock n' roll (now I'm that 35-year old man...for better or worse). I gotta say, it was pretty cool to actually see hip hop emerge from a culture to a genre of music. If I had to pick one year of musical notoriety from memory (one that I lived), 1987 definitely stands out. Here's why (and here's a great illustration of my diverse taste in music). I was blown away by two albums that came out that year. Guns N' Roses' Apetite For Destruction and U2's The Joshua Tree. (just to paint more of the picture, I was still in awe by another album that came out the year before....rest assured The Beastie Boys' Licensed To Ill cassette tape was blasting in my boom box!)

Alas, I can unequivocally say that I was not breathing when the best year for music was bestowed upon us. That much I know (even if I can't pick one). How about a final four:

  • 1967 - This beautiful year saw the release of The Beatles Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. It also produced the debut albums for Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, and Pink Floyd.
  • 1972 - The Rolling Stones unveiled their masterpiece double LP Exile On Main Street. David Bowie also unveiled a new persona, Ziggy Stardust. He did this with the release of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. ("Ziggy Stardust" is still my favorite Bowie song of all time).
  • 1975 - Some classic albums were released this year. Bruce Springsteen's Born To Run, Bob Dylan's Blood On The Tracks, Neil Young's Tonight's The Night, and Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti.
  • 1977 - Debut albums by The Clash, The Talking Heads, and probably the most influential punk album of all time: The Sex Pistols' Never Mind The Bollocks, Here's The Sex Pistols.
