Personal use firewood permits are now available for purchase on the Custer Gallatin National Forest.

Permits can now be purchased for a minimum of four cords of firewood or maximum of 12 cords. A cord measures four feet wide by four feet high in an eight-foot long stack. Only dead trees with no green needles are available under the permit and all wood removed from the forest must be cut to a maximum length of six feet or less.

Permits are $6 per cord at Ranger Districts in Bozeman, West Yellowstone, Gardiner and Livingston. Permits are also available at Owenhouse Ace Hardware in Bozeman (both locations) and Lee & Dad's Grocery and True Value Hardware in Belgrade.

Check with the local ranger station before cutting firewood for any special local cutting restrictions or requirements and make sure you have an updated motorized vehicle use map. For more information on firewood permits, contact your local Forest Service office. For travel maps and more information on the Custer Gallatin National Forest, visit fs.usda.gov/custergallatin.
