The hookah has been around for hundreds of years, invented by ancient doctors who thought passing tobacco smoke through water first would purify it.

Noble lineage aside, though, today it’s commonly referred to as a water-bong and used for tobaccos both legal and not-so-legal.

So if you’re in need of a gift for the, ahem, “recreational smoker” who has everything, you may want to consider a Porsche-branded hookah — or, as upscale retailer Harrods is calling it, a shisha.

The sleek device stands nearly two feet tall, boasts a $2,000 price tag and, according to a press release, “combines high-quality materials such as aluminium, stainless steel and glass with the timeless and unique design approach of the luxury brand.” It also “comes with a long flexible tube made out of TecFlex material, which is also used for the classic Porsche Design TecFlex writing tools.”

There’s no doubt it’s absolutely beautiful, and that’s what worries some health experts. The Tobacco Control Collaborating Centre (TCCC) believes a single shisha smoking session could result in carbon monoxide levels four-to-five times higher than those produced by smoking just one cigarette.

The director of the TCCC, Hilary Wareing, said, “We’re very concerned about any new entry in the market, but a powerful brand such as Porsche could encourage younger people to smoke shisha, who could then move on to cigarettes. Shisha smoking is already seen as trendy for young people and Porsche coming into the market will not help that.”
