Refused Are Already Plotting Out a Follow-Up to This Year’s ‘Freedom’

After returning with their first album in 15-plus years earlier this summer, Refused say they’re already resolved to record a follow-up.

The Swedish hardcore punk outfit dropped Freedom back in June. The album served as a follow-up to The Shape of Punk to Come, which arrived in 1998 just before the band parted ways for a 14-year hiatus. Now, Refused say they want to maintain the momentum of their reunion.

“We’re musically curious people and we just want to see where we can take this,” bassist Magnus Flagge told NME. “We want to do more spontaneously and not so much tension to prove something I guess.”

But drummer David Sandstrom said only time will tell what a fifth Refused album will sound like.

“We still have this wish to be a band that exists and keeps doing records and keeps touring because we’ve found our place with the fans,” Sandstrom said. “One of the things we talked about when we did Freedom was we wanted to sound like Refused, alebit in 2015. I think the next record, we want it to be a Refused record. Who knows exactly what it’s gonna sound like?”

Refused are currently on tour in Europe. They’ll head to the U.S. on Nov. 23 when they’ll make three stops in California and play a pair of shows in Portland and Seattle. Check out their upcoming itinerary over at the band’s Facebook.
