General deer and elk season is set to begin this Saturday, October 26 and Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is reminding hunters that state law requires they stop at all game check stations while traveling to and from hunting areas. This includes hunters who have not harvested an animal.

Check stations will be running at various locations in Region 3 during the hunting season. When a hunter pulls into a Montana game check station, FWP staff will gather information about the health, sex and age of an animal harvested. The hunter will be asked where the animal was harvested and perhaps other questions about his or her hunt. If Enforcement staff is on hand, the hunter may be asked to show that the animal is legally tagged.

Information gathered during these annual game checks contributes to the management of populations and future hunting opportunities. Failure to stop at a game check station when personnel are on duty is a misdemeanor punishable by fine.
