Buford, WY Has a Population of One – Meet Its Only, Lonely Resident [VIDEO]

Don Sammons

Feel like getting away from it all? Then consider moving to Buford, Wyoming, where just one man, Don Sammons, comprises the town’s entire population. The ’Today‘ show profiled Sammons and his determination to keep his town alive.

Sammons left Los Angeles 20 years ago and moved to Buford when it had a total of seven residents. Now, he’s the lone occupant in the quiet town, which has only a single paved road running past its abandoned schoolhouse.

Buford once boasted 2,000 residents and was a bustling railroad town. Over the past 90 years, residents moved west and the population dwindled. Still, Sammons keeps the homefires burning.

“I’m here because I want to be here,” says Sammons, who runs the Buford Trading Post, the town’s grocery store, hardware store and liquor store. He also owns the town’s only snowplow and tow truck.

Buford may not go on forever: “I am getting to the point where I’m thinking about retirement,” he admits. “I don’t know what’s going to happen to Buford when I decide to retire.”
