Spoon Debut New Songs at Surprise Austin Show

With Spoon believed to be set to put out a new record in March, it makes sense that they would want to preview the new material in front of a select group of fans. Last night (Jan. 6), they played their first show in 14 months at Antone's in their hometown of Austin.

Sterogum noticed that the band tweeted out a picture of a setlist with the caption, "Thank you, Austin." Among the nine songs played were four new ones, "Whisper I'll Listen," "Talk You Into It," "Hot Thoughts" and "Can I Sit Next to U?" The others were "Rent I Pay," "Inside Out" and "Rainy Taxi" from 2014's They Want My Soul, "Don't You Evah" from 2007's Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga and "My Mathematical Mind" from 2005's Gimme Fiction.

Back in December, another new song called "I Ain't the One" premiered on the Showtime series Shameless, which is embedded above. Shortly thereafter, Spoon changed the pictures on their social media profiles to that of a skull, which led to speculation as to whether the follow-up to They Want My Soul was imminent. A day later, Billboard revealed that they had re-signed with Matador, where they began their career with 1996's Telephono, citing sources who told them that their as-yet untitled record would arrive in March, although there has been no confirmation from the band or the label.

No video has yet surfaced from the Antone's concert, so it's possible that, as Arcade Fire and Mumford and Sons have done at similar shows in recent years, they banned cell phones during the performance.
