To find the states that are home to the happiest Americans, personal finance website WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 25 key metrics. Surprisingly, Montana ranked #21 (due to a high suicide rate). See the full breakdown here.

WalletHub's data set ranges from emotional health to income levels to sports participation rates. Montana ranked in the middle of the pack, due to a high suicide rate. Montana’s suicide rate is four times as high as the District of Columbia’s.

Montana came in just ahead of Connecticut (who ranked 22nd). I was born and raised in Connecticut. All I can say is that since moving to Montana 8 years ago, I am off the charts happier! See the in-depth analysis from WalletHub here.
