Suspect in Custody After Armed Standoff in Belgrade

On Monday, February 11, at approximately 2:45 p.m. authorities received a domestic disturbance report between a male and female in Belgrade.

A female was assaulted inside of a business at 90 North Kennedy. She then fled the building and was assisted by citizens in the area who observed her seeking help.

A male suspect then reportedly followed the woman from the building. The man then observed others assisting the woman and returned inside the building at 90 North Kennedy. Officers were called at this point.

When Belgrade police officers arrived on scene, they requested medical treatment for the woman. She told officers that she had been strangled and threatened with a gun.

It was at this point that officers attempted to located the male suspect.

Officers soon observed the suspect through a window and attempted to make contact. The suspect refused to respond to several orders made by officers.

A perimeter was established by the Belgrade Police Department, Gallatin County Sheriff’s Department and the Montana Highway Patrol. The Gallatin County Sheriff/Bozeman Police Department Special Response Team was requested to assist with containment, negotiations and entry to the building.

After several hours, and many attempts to speak with the suspect, SRT deployed what they call a "less-than-lethal" option on the suspect.

The suspect was taken into custody without injury to himself or officers at approximately 10:30 p.m. He was then transported to the Gallatin County Detention Center.

The suspect was held on charges of Strangulation and Assault with a Weapon.

The suspect has been identified by authorities as 56-year-old David Harold Hixson.
