Southwest Montanans, if you are dreaming of a white Christmas, you are luckier than a lot of other people in the U.S.

That’s according to information published by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Climatic Data Center. This map shows the historic probability of there being at least one inch of snow on the ground in the Lower 48 states on Dec. 25.

Dark gray shows places where the probability is less than 10 percent. The lighter the color blue, the higher the probability for snow on Dec. 25. White shows probabilities greater than 90 percent.

It’s no surprise the southern states have the lowest probability of getting an inch or more of the white stuff this Christmas, while the Northern Rockies and upper Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan are among the areas with the highest probabilities.

Here in Bozeman, we’re already well on our way after about six inches of snow fell over the weekend, according to NOAA.
