Did you know that President Taft was the first president to toss the ceremonial first pitch before a Major League Baseball game? He did in in 1910 on Opening Day at Griffith Stadium before a Washington Senators game. Since Taft, every president has followed suit taking the mound at some point during his presidency.

Franklin Roosevelt holds the record for the most times a president got the honor, hurling nine different times (eight opening days and an All-Star Game). Here’s a look back at some of the more memorable performances of presidents over the past century:

A man died at the Oakland A's-Texas Rangers game Thursday night in Arlington, Texas when he fell 20 feet over the left field wall while trying to catch a ball.

The victim, identified as Shannon Stone, had reached over a rail to grab a foul ball thrown into the stands by Rangers' star Josh Hamilton in the second inning. Stone, who was in the lower level with his son, tumbled into an area behind a wall near a scoreboard.

Doctors say Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter has a form of inoperable brain cancer called glioblastoma. Doctors at Duke University treating the 57-year-old Carter released a statement saying surgery is not a good alternative at this time, although "we discussed an aggressive treatment plan with Mr. Carter and his family, which will include chemotherapy and radiation."

Carter, who just wrapped up his second season as baseball coach at Palm Beach Atlantic University, plans to undergo treatment near his home in Florida.

Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Harmon Killebrew died Tuesday at his Scottsdale, Arizona home after battling esophageal cancer, reports ESPN.com. He was 74. Killebrew was diagnosed with the cancer six months ago.

Nicknamed "The Killer," Killebrew, who played from 1954-1975, was an 11-time All-Star who won the American League MVP Award in 1969. With him anchoring the lineup, the Twins went to the World Series for the first time in 1965 and made appearances in the American League Championship Series in 1969 and 1970. Killebrew became the first Twin to be immortalized in the hall of fame, getting inducted in 1984. His jersey was retired by the Twins in 1975.

Last year, Barack Obama threw out the first pitch at the Washington Nationals home opener, continuing a tradition of Presidents throwing out first pitches that stretches back to William Howard Taft in 1910.

This year, however, Obama is taking a pass on getting the season started with a ceremonial first pitch. Instead, recently unemployed talk show host Larry King will do the honor before the Nationals' Thursday-afternoon match-up with the Atlanta Braves.

Some of President Obama's critics have suggested he doesn't want to take to the mound because his past attempts at first pitches have been, well, not good.
