It's a scary time to be a renter in the state of Montana. It's been that way for several years but now more than ever, as property owners across the state have received their new property tax bills - and some of the increases are alarming for owners and renters alike.

Gallatin County property taxes look like they're about to go up. A LOT. Property owners have been sent their latest property assessments and the upcoming increases are terrifying. Folks have many questions and they'll be answered at town halls the Montana Department of Revenue have scheduled across the county.

Did your head explode this week as you opened your new Gallatin County property assessment? You're not alone. Nobody expected their property taxes to go down or stay the same - we all knew they were going up. HOWEVER, the increase this year for most property owners is downright painful.

As much as we all complain about paying our taxes, here in Montana we are fortunate to have the third lowest overall tax rate in the United States.

With all the talk about Bozeman's housing prices, property taxes and the cost of living here in general, a few of us got together over beers to discuss long time residents not being able to afford living here anymore. (Socially distanced, of course.)

One 61-year-old resident texted us that he will not be able to retire in the valley that has been his home his entire life.

The commission has come to the well too many times. Bozeman Safety Building, new high school are all going to hit resident’s wallets and purses in the coming months.

Property taxes in Montana are some of the oldest on record and not often clear to many of us. The Bureau of Business and Economic Research at the University of Montana is coming to Bozeman on February 3rd.
