Television appearances by Tom Waits are few and far between. That’s why we were upset back in April when the publicity-shy songwriter postponed his slots on ‘The Late Show with David Letterman’ and ‘Late Night with Jimmy Fallon’ for unspecified reasons. However, Waits has announced that the dates have been rescheduled.

Waits will appear on ‘Letterman’ on July 9 and ‘Fallon’ the next night. “He will be talking with the hosts and giving the first live performance of songs from his latest recording, ‘Bad As Me,’” read a statement on his Facebook page. “Musicians joining Waits on stage include his son Casey Waits on drums, long time bassist Larry Taylor, guitarist David Hidalgo, keyboardist Augie Myers and guitarist Big Bill Morganfield.

If his past appearances are anything to go by, we’re as excited for the interview as we are for the performances. Waits’ vivid imagination and warped sense of humor has led to some memorable moments over the years. And Letterman and Fallon have the smarts to know when to play along and when to get out of the way.

Released in 2011, ‘Bad as Me’ was Waits’ first album of new material since 2004′s  ‘Real Gone,’ but that doesn’t mean he’s been in hiding. In 2006 he put out ‘Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards,’ a three-CD set that compiled rarities and previously unreleased songs. Three years later saw ‘Glitter and Doom Live,’ which documented his 2008 tour of North America and Europe.
