Two Door Cinema Club, ‘Sleep Alone’ – Song Review

Sleep Alone
Kitsuné / Glassnote

While ‘Sleep Alone,’ the newest from Two Door Cinema Club, is soaring, searching and sweet, it leaves something to be desired.

The lead single from the Northern Irish band’s second studio album, ‘Beacon,’ is heavy into the Death Cab for Cutie vibe, with frontman Alex Trimble supplying the polite croons instead of Ben Gibbard. The U.K. lads borrow heavily from the Seattle band, whose jangly melodies and honeyed harmonies show up as major influences here.

That’s not to say that the track isn’t a pleasant piece of pop, as it surely is the sort of thing that will blow up the Glastonbury Festival next summer. Trimble’s vocals interplay well with Sam Halliday’s lead guitar, though the lyrics themselves are confounding: Trimble jumps from the first person –”It’s in my head / I have said“– to third –”He sleeps alone / He needs no army” — with little explanation or effect, showing that the band still has room to grow.

Produced by U2 and Bloc Party knob-turner Jacknife Lee, the sound of the song (and the album, by extension) is one of high-gloss sheen. ‘Beacon’ drops on Sept. 3 in the U.K. and Sept. 4 in the U.S. — let’s hope it shines a little more light than this one.
