One of the hottest conversations among locals in Montana right is about growth and development, and how to strike a balance between progress and keeping Montana, well, Montana. Development feels inevitable in many parts of the state, especially as land values climb and open spaces shrink. But every once in a while, a story comes along that reminds us preservation is still possible. This is one of those rare and remarkable moments.

In Phillips County near Malta, longtime ranchers Dale and Janet Veseth have made a decision that will protect a massive piece of Montana forever. Instead of selling their 38,000 acre cattle ranch to the highest bidder, the Veseths donated the entire property to the Ranchers Stewardship Alliance, a nonprofit focused on keeping working ranches intact and protecting the culture and landscapes of the Yellowstone region. The ranch is valued at more than 21 million dollars, making it the largest known donation of a working ranch in Montana history.

What makes the story even more unique is that Dale and Janet are not walking away. They will continue operating the Veseth Cattle Company, just as their family has done for generations.

The land itself has deep roots. Dale’s family has been connected to the property since the 1880s, and at one time the area supported around 100 families. Today, only a handful remain. Rising land prices and slim margins have made ranching nearly impossible for anyone without significant wealth, a reality playing out across Montana.

In a time when open land feels increasingly fragile, the Veseths’ decision stands as a powerful statement. It shows that with intention and community driven solutions, Montana’s landscapes and way of life can still be protected for generations to come.

The Hell's A-Roarin' Horse Drive

The Hell’s A-Roarin’ Horse Drive happens every Memorial Day weekend in Gardiner, Montana, as hundreds of horses are driven from the rodeo grounds up to the mountain town of Jardine. Hosted by Susan and Warren Johnson of Hell’s A-Roarin’ Outfitters, this Western tradition honors veterans and supports them in a meaningful way. All net proceeds from the event’s live auction go toward purchasing Action Trackchairs—custom, all-terrain wheelchairs that help disabled veterans regain their freedom and access to the outdoors. It’s a powerful mix of community, heritage, and heartfelt purpose.
