Officials Announce Beartooth Highway 2024 Closure

For visitors of Yellowstone National Park, a drive over the Beartooth Highway is considered the cherry on top. The highway runs from Cooke City, Montana to Red Lodge, Montana and spans nearly 69 miles. The drive is approximately 3.5 hours. If you want to feel like you're sitting on top of the world, the Beartooth Highway is the place to go. When you're at the summit, the elevation is slightly below 11,000 feet.

According to the Montana Department of Transportation, the Beartooth Highway will close for the 2024 season on Tuesday, October 15 at 8:00 a.m. Due to the elevation, unpredictable weather, extreme cold temperatures, and excessive amounts of snow are common. Snow drifts as high as 26 feet have been reported.

The Beartooth Highway is closed each fall for the safety of travelers, and usually opens on Memorial Day weekend every year, weather permitting. On October 15, the gates will close for the final time in 2024. Please be respectful of the gate closures for the safety of yourself and others.
