I recently found a USA Today story ranking all 50 states and was surprised on where Montana is ranked.  I personally love Montana and always feel safe.  I was surprised to read that Montana was just below the national average on violent crime which overall dropped by 3% nationally from last year.  Our rank and a link to the USA Today story are listed below.

24. Montana
• Violent crime rate: 374.1 per 100,000 people
• Total 2018 murders: 34 (8th lowest)
• Imprisonment rate: 447 adults per 100,000 (22nd lowest)
• Poverty rate: 13% (22nd highest)
• Most dangerous city: Helena

Ranking 24 is an improvement from the previous years study where Montana ranked 22nd most dangerous state.  Here is the link for the 2019 study.
