NFL Player Jovan Belcher’s Murder-Suicide Pits Ted Nugent Against Bob Costas on Gun Control

Bob Costas does not have a fan in rocker Ted Nugent. During Sunday night’s halftime commentary on NBC’s ‘Football Night in America,’ the famed sportscaster quoted and paraphrased another sportswriter’s argument for gun control in the wake of the murder-suicide by linebacker Jovan Belcher that rocked the Kansas City Chiefs and the NFL on Saturday. Nugent spent Monday morning responding.

“We thought Bob Costas was smarter than that. Only fools blame tools instead of human failings. Shame Bob,” Nugent tweeted just before 7AM ET.

Costas praised and borrowed from a story written by FoxSports.com writer Jason Whitlock, who was a longtime columnist for the Kansas City Star. Whitlock writes:

“Our current gun culture simply ensures that more and more domestic disputes will end in the ultimate tragedy, and that more convenience-store confrontations over loud music coming from a car will leave more teenage boys bloodied and dead.”

Costas also used a stronger argument made in Whitlock’s next to last paragraph which reads, “Handguns do not enhance our safety. They exacerbate our flaws, tempt us to escalate arguments, and bait us into embracing confrontation rather than avoiding it.” To which Nugent replied:

Not surprisingly, the issue has become a hot topic on blogs and social media websites.
