Lorde Talks Coachella Performance, The Pressure of Being a Role Model + More

When Lorde made her Coachella debut over the weekend, the experience was mind-blowing for the 17-year-old New Zealand native.

“[My keyboardist Jimmy and I] always talked about that as the pinnacle,” she told ELLE magazine after the show. “If we played Coachella we could die happy.”

“It was a crazy show,” she added about her set.

But there are still many, many professional milestones left for the already two-time Grammy winner. She is still navigating her newfound fame and success, which comes with such territory as being a role model to women all over the world.

“I definitely think about the imprint I’m leaving on people my age. Particularly girls,” she revealed. “I’m sensitive to how women are portrayed because sometimes it kind of sucks.”

While she may be aware of her new status, she can’t deny that it comes with a great deal of pressure.

“Being a role model is crazy because I’m probably going to screw up at some point. Probably soon,” she told the magazine. “And people are going to be like, ‘You’re not a good role model.’ But I figure, I’m 17 and I’m very much imperfect. I dunno. I’m just figuring this out as well and I think people are aware of that.”

“Since I started making music a lot was made of how old I was and it made me think about, ‘What happens when I’m 25? Will people still like what I’m doing? Is it still important if I’m not this hyper-youthful being?'” she continued.

“It’s stupid. I know I’m being silly. But I can’t help it. It’s just one of those things,” she admitted. “I’ll get over it.”

There’s no doubt that the world will soon calm her fears — because based on her incredible performance at Coachella, Lorde is clearly here to stay.
