BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — Federal wildlife officials are offering a $1,000 reward for information on the shooting of a golden eagle on the Crow Indian Reservation in southeastern Montana.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said the eagle carcass was found Feb. 8 with its tail removed in a drainage ditch along Blue Creek Road north of Pryor.

The six-month-old eagle had been captured by wildlife researchers last summer and fitted with a satellite transmitter.

Golden eagles are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. Members of tribes may legally possess eagle parts or feathers but federal law prohibits killing the birds.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Fish and Wildlife Service at (406) 247-7355 or the state poaching tip line at 1-800-TIP-MONT (800-847-6668).
