Tom Petty’s ‘You Got Lucky’ Covered by the Gaslight Anthem

Let’s say you’re listening to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ 1982 hit, ‘You Got Lucky.’ Great song, you’re thinking, but those synthesizers don’t sound as cool now as they did 30 years ago. Well, if that’s how you feel, you’re in luck. The Gaslight Anthem have released a cover of the song as a B-side to their new single, ’45.’

With the exception of some rough edges replacing the polish and the tinny synths that were so in vogue at the time, it’s an otherwise faithful rendition. Drummer Benny Horowitz even nails Stan Lynch hi-hat work. Another difference is lead singer Brian Fallon, who replaces Petty’s menacing, icy vocal with a wounded, vulnerable take.

This is not the first time the Gaslight Anthem have referenced Petty. On ‘Even Cowgirls Get the Blues’ from their 2008 breakthrough, the Fallon describes how his old friends have matured and moved on with their lives. The narrator defiantly declares, echoing Petty’s ‘Yer So Bad,’ “But not me baby, I still love Tom Petty songs and driving old men crazy.”

The Gaslight Anthem, a punk-pop band from New Brunswick, N.J., are one of the best young acts around. They have occasionally shared a stage with fellow Jersey boy Bruce Springsteen, who handpicked them to open up for him at some U.K. festival dates in 2009. Their fourth album, ‘Handwritten,’ will be out on Mercury on July 24.
