Just because it's been so unbearably cold, doesn't mean that Montana's in a much better place for winter snowpack. Much needed snow is headed for some mountain ranges in southwest Montana.

Montana is still hurting when it comes to current SWE, or Snow Water Equivalent. Take a look at the SNOTEL map below to see the latest percentages as of January 12th, 2024. Things are NOT looking good and much more snow is needed.

The mountains east of Bozeman appear to be the target of most of the expected snowfall. Winds will continue between Livingston and Big Timber, so use caution when traveling I-90. There might be blowing and drifting snow, with reduced visibility. Heavier snow expected in the mountains.

  • A WINTER STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM TUESDAY EVENING THROUGH THURSDAY AFTERNOON.
  • WHAT...Heavy snow possible.
  • Total snow accumulations between 4 and 9 inches possible.
  • Greatest amounts are expected to be north of I-90.
  • WHERE...Portions of central and south central Montana.
  • WHEN... For the Winter Storm Watch, from Tuesday evening through Thursday afternoon.
  • IMPACTS...The dangerously cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes.
  • Regarding the winter storm watch, roads will likely become snow packed, slick and hazardous, with areas of poor visibility.
  • ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Gusty southwest to west winds may cause local blowing and drifting snow today. Areas most likely to be affected include I-90 from Livingston to Big Timber, and US-191 from Big Timber to Harlowton.
  • Visibility may be reduced to under 2 miles at times. Local rural roads may also see drifting. Drivers should use caution.
  • PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... During the wind chill advisory, people are urged to stay indoors until conditions improve. If you must go outside, dress in layers.
  • People may want to delay all travel if possible during the winter storm watch period. If travel is absolutely necessary, drive with extreme caution and be prepared for sudden changes in visibility.
