Tuesday into Wednesday morning could bring 40 MPH winds and much more snow for the southern mountains of Madison and Gallatin counties. The West Yellowstone area is an area of concern, with the high peaks of that area to get up to a foot of fresh snow.

The last few weeks have seen lots of snow fall in places that desperately needed it, and more is on the way. The good news is that Montana's snowpack levels are getting better. According to the National Weather Service:

  • WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 5 AM TUESDAY TO 5 AM WEDNESDAY.
  • WHAT...Snow and areas of blowing snow expected.
  • Total snow accumulations mostly between 1 and 3 inches in the valleys and 3 to 6 inches in the mountains.
  • However, the West Yellowstone area could receive up to 6 inches, with some adjacent peaks possibly getting up to 12 inches.
  • Winds gusting as high as 40 mph.
  • WHERE...Gallatin and Madison County Mountains and Centennial Mountains, Madison River Valley, and Ruby Mountains and Southern Beaverhead Mountains.
  • WHEN...From 5 AM Tuesday to 5 AM Wednesday.
  • IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility.
  • ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The peak period for snow and blowing snow looks to be during the day on Tuesday, with activity decreasing gradually Tuesday night.
  • PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Slow down and use caution while traveling.
