With Luck, Southern MT Could Get 8" Of Fantastic New Snow

After temperatures in the mid 50s this week, the southern mountains of Montana could get a welcomed blast of fresh snow by Friday night. The only downer is that significant winds will probably accompany this new storm front, so back country adventurists need to use caution.

As of this writing, Montana is generally between 50% and 75% of normal snowpack. Meaning, we need a lot more snow and we need it soon. Some ski areas have been tentative on their opening days and temporary operating hours. We ALL have our fingers crossed for lots of new snow.

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT WEDNESDAY TO 9 PM THURSDAY.
WHAT...Snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 2 and 5 inches up to pass level.
Total snow above pass level between 4 and 8 inches.
Winds gusting as high as 45 mph.
WHERE...Gallatin and Madison County Mountains and Centennial Mountains.
WHEN...From midnight tonight to 9 PM Thursday.
IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Slow down and use caution while traveling.

If you or someone you know is going to be traveling south into Idaho, be aware that this storm could significantly impact travel over the pass. The high plains could get blowing and drifting snow too, reducing visibility.

Total snow accumulations of 1 to 5 inches below 6500 feet and 6 to 11 inches in the mountains above 6500 feet.
Winds gusting as high as 35 mph at times.
WHERE...Island Park region.
WHEN...From midnight tonight to 9 PM MST Thursday.
IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult especially over mountain passes.
