A friend recently sent me a video of researchers attempting to tag a sedated grizzly bear in 1959, and it's absolutely insane.

There are a lot of grizzly bears in Montana. It's not uncommon to hear stories about humans having encounters with grizzlies or getting attacked. Grizzly bears are fierce predators and are incredibly protective of their territory. You never want to get between a grizzly and its food source.

In 1959, brothers John and Frank Craighead were conducting research on the grizzly bear population in Yellowstone National Park when things got a little crazy.

The partially sedated bear that they were studying began to wake up and instantly became aggressive. The researchers quickly retreated to their vehicles to avoid being attacked by the angry bear. Fortunately, it was all caught on video.

The video is a great example of how powerful and dangerous grizzly bears can be. It's also important to note that getting too close to a grizzly bear was still a bad idea back in the '50s.

Here's what Unofficial Networks said about the video:

The National Parks Service estimated that there were only 136 grizzlies living in Yellowstone by 1975. That population has bounced back significantly with the estimated total bear population in Yellowstone being 728 bears in 2019.

The population of grizzly bears in Yellowstone National Park continues to grow, and that means the possibility of having an encounter with one is greater. Always stay at least 100 yards away from grizzly bears and wolves when visiting YNP. For more information about bear safety, click here.
