Director Joss Whedon almost has his pick of the litter when it comes to superheroes to cast for 'Avengers 2' there's one character he would love to include more than anyone else: Batman! But is there really any chance of this massive crossover ever happening?

ComingSoon.net was on the scene when Whedon briefly spoke about the Dark Knight at a recent Lincoln Center screening of his latest film, 'Much Ado About Nothing.' During a post-screening Q+A (which we imagine was almost 95% focused on projects not called 'Much Ado About Nothing'), Whedon was asked which Marvel character he'd like to tackle and he answered:

If I could get my hands on absolutely anybody it would be Batman. (audience applause) He's a Marvel character in the DC universe.

It's probably a fanboy's dream to see what Whedon could do with Batman, but if we're being honest, this is a marriage that most likely will never happen. A DC superhero would never appear in a Marvel film, certainly not DC's most marketable character. Whedon has his hands full with 'The Avengers 2' for the next two years and is fully committed to Marvel until June, 2015 (when his overall deal with them expires) so you can imagine he's not leaving to reboot 'The Dark Knight' at Warner Bros. anytime soon.

However, it isn't without precedent that a director would leave one comic universe for another. In 2004, Bryan Singer abruptly left behind the 'X-Men' franchise to work on 'Superman Returns,' which, though a controversial move at the time, but didn't strain his relationship with Fox or Marvel much since he's returned and is working on 'X-Men: Days of Future Past'.

How would you feel about Joss Whedon tackling a Batman story? Do you think a cinematic crossover of the Marvel and DC universe will ever happen?
