BILLINGS, MT — The Billings Police Department released details regarding a critical officer-involved shooting following a vehicle break-in on March 26, 2026.

The incident occurred in the 1200 block of North 26th Street when officers responded to a call about a suspicious individual reportedly breaking into a vehicle.

Officers arrived at the scene around 1:50 p.m. and made contact with the suspect, who fled northbound on North 26th Street. Within minutes, the suspect reportedly reached for a firearm in his waistband. Officer Quin Johnson, a seven-year veteran of the department, discharged his service weapon, striking the suspect in the head.

Additional officers quickly arrived and issued verbal commands. The suspect continued to hold the firearm, prompting officers to deploy a beanbag round, which caused him to move away from the weapon.

The suspect was then safely taken into custody and received immediate medical attention until emergency personnel arrived. He was transported to a local hospital in stable condition. A Model 1911 .45 caliber firearm was recovered at the scene.

The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Caleb Denny of Box Elder, was released from the hospital on March 29, 2026, and arrested.

Denny faces multiple charges, including three counts of Assault on a Peace Officer, Criminal Possession of Dangerous Drugs, Obstructing a Peace Officer, Resisting Arrest, and Criminal Trespass to a Vehicle.

The Billings Police Department acknowledged the assistance of the Billings Fire Department and AMR in managing the incident and ensuring public safety. Authorities continue to review the case, emphasizing their commitment to transparency and community protection.
