The investigation indicated a passenger vehicle driven by a juvenile was traveling west on Oak Street in the outside lane, the lane closest to the north curb. As another vehicle in front of the juvenile driver came to a stop to allow Brown to cross, the juvenile changed lanes and proceeded through the posted pedestrian crosswalk, striking Brown as she crossed.

Authorities say speed does not appear to have played a role in the crash. Instead, the investigation points to something far more common and preventable. Distracted and inattentive driving are believed to be the primary factors.

Police say the driver was distracted by activity inside the vehicle and did not recognize why the car ahead had stopped at the crosswalk.

Since the driver is a juvenile, their identity has not been released. Investigators say the case is nearing completion. Once finalized, it will be reviewed by both city and county attorneys to determine what charges, if any, will be filed.

The tragic loss of Leslie Brown is a heartbreaking reminder of why it's crucial to pay attention to your surroundings while driving. Taking that extra second to slow down, look twice, and stay focused behind the wheel can make all the difference.
