Eddie Bauer has announced plans to close its remaining Montana locations in 2026, marking the end of the brand’s physical retail presence in a state that practically lives its lifestyle.

For decades, Eddie Bauer has been a go-to brand for Montanans who live in flannel, down jackets, and anything that can survive a real winter, but that familiar storefront is about to disappear.

The retailer already closed its Missoula and Great Falls stores, and the Bozeman location inside Gallatin Crossing closed its doors at the end of January. Eddie Bauer was founded in 1920 and has been outfitting Americans for over 100 years.

Business Insider reports that the company is preparing to file for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy and plans to close 200 stores across the country, including in Montana. The only remaining open location in the state is at the Rimrock Mall in Billings, but the fate of that store is unclear.

Throughout the past few years, several major retailers, including Sears, Rite Aid, and Joann Fabric, have closed brick-and-mortar locations. The convenience of online shopping has changed the retail landscape and how customers shop.

Many retailers have traded big box stores for a smaller footprint, and massive shopping malls have become a thing of the past.  As of right now, the future of Eddie Bauer is unknown, but it sounds like the company could be shuttering all of its physical locations in America and Canada.

For many Montanans, these stores were a reliable stop before hunting season, a last-minute winter coat upgrade, or a place to grab gear that would make life easier for people who live here.
