Father John Misty recently introduced a cover of Nine Inch Nails’ dark, gritty “Closer” as his “favorite love song.”

“It’s a little sappy, but I would like to play my favorite love song for you,” Josh Tillman wryly told his audience at the Riviera Theater in Chicago before jumping into the synth-warped Downward Spiral single. The former Fleet Foxes drummer broke out into full-blown howls by the song’s highly sentimental cry: “I want to f--- you like an animal.” Check out a video of the performance at the top.

Tillman has worked a wide range of covers into his set lists as of late. Most recently, he performed Rihanna's Anti single "Kiss It Better." He's also tackled Arcade Fire's "The Suburbs" and Nirvana's "Heart-Shaped Box." Of course, some of the singer's covers have led to pretty great publicity snafus.

FJM's latest full-length, last year's I Love You, Honeybear, of course, immerses itself in love songs -- both in earnest and doused in the singer's biting wit. The album is out now via Sub Pop.

Tillman's tour continues tonight in Urbana, Ill. See his full schedule right here.
