Foo Fighters’ New Album Will Feature Paul McCartney – on Drums
Foo Fighters' forthcoming album Concrete and Gold will feature Paul McCartney, but not on bass. Instead, he'll be playing drums.
Leader Dave Grohl revealed the latest in a string of guest stars during an interview with ET Canada. “He’s a pal," Grohl enthused. "We’ve known him for a long. He’s great. He’s the most wonderful person in the world. He’s a great guy.”
The new track, to be released as part of Concrete and Gold in September, emerged from a very loose setting, Grohl added. McCartney hadn't even heard the song when he arrived, and he wasn't there to play his regular instrument. Grohl walked him through things with an acoustic guitar, then the ex-Beatles star took over a special set that had been put together by one of the Foo Fighters drum techs. Everything was reportedly completed in two takes.
Though best known as a bassist, McCartney actually played drums a several Beatles tracks – including "Back in the U.S.S.R." and "Ballad of John and Yoko" – as well as on solo albums like 1970's McCartney, 1973's Band on the Run, 1980's McCartney II, 1997's Flaming Pie and 2005's Chaos and Creation in the Backyard.
Previous confirmed guests on Concrete and Gold include the Kills’ Alison Mosshart (“La Dee Da” and “The Sky Is a Neighborhood”) and Boyz II Men’s Shawn Stockman (the title track). Grohl has also mentioned another as-yet-unrevealed contributor, who he dubbed “the biggest pop star in the world.”
McCartney memorably sat in with Grohl and the rest of the surviving members of Nirvana on "Cut Me Some Slack," which debuted during the 12-12-12 benefit concert. Grohl also performed with McCartney at the Grammys in 2009.
