Montana, the 4th largest state in the United States, is full of people whose family has been here for many generations—hundreds of years, in some cases.

Farming has been the way of life here for as long as people can remember. Aside from farming, mining for gold became a large reason why people came to Montana; in hopes of hitting it big and becoming wealthy.

With so many people from other areas of the world coming to Montana, I began to wonder how many of them were related in some way. With such a big state, there should be lots of different surnames, but I know that roots run deep here.

What are the 5 most common surnames in Montana? According to American Surnames, the top 5 are:

  1. Johnson
  2. Smith
  3. Anderson
  4. Jones
  5. Nelson

My family's surname is Jones, so I guess I have more in common with Montana than I thought.
