Meet The Creative Minds Behind Montana’s Wild New Film Sharktana
Hollywood has come up with a ton of incredibly wacky plots over the years, to varying degrees of commercial success. 2006's Snakes on a Plane seemed to bring back the corny-campy thriller-esque film style to the mainstream big screen for today's generation.
More recently, Cocaine Bear comes to mind; I thought it was actually pretty entertaining. Dumb? Yes. Farfetched? Sure. But it was funny. Now, a homegrown Montana film is taking outlandish movie concepts in a fresh direction with the movie Sharktana.
The movie kicked off filming this month near Lost Horse Lodge, outside of Hamilton, MT, and Sharktana is very much a made-in-Montana film. We can assume zero Learjets were flying in A-listers for this low-budget production.

So what's the plot for Sharktana?
Go ahead and put facts or reality aside, because Sharktana's storyline is a doozy. Described as a horror-comedy film, the basic plot goes like this: a warm winter (like we're having now??) melts the ice in a remote mountain cave, and frozen sharks are suddenly unleashed onto the local ski slopes. Think “Sharknado” on a snowboard.
I haven't been able to find much more about the plot, but does it really matter? I'm guessing the sharks cause mayhem, murder, and destruction on the mountain. Then the hero eventually saves the day, while perhaps falling in love with a cute snow bunny?
From concept to production, it's all about local.
The concept for Sharktana came from Robert Shippy, a local who is a former chairlift operator. He thought "sharks in the snow" sounded like a fun disaster concept, and teamed up with Christina Ackerman, an independent filmmaker from Hamilton, who is directing the movie.
Sharktana received a $40,000 Big Sky Film grant from the Montana Film Office to help with production costs. No word yet on a release date, but since it's an indie production, it will probably make the rounds in the indie film circuit before landing on streaming sites or - potentially - the big screen at your local AMC Theater.
