As an only child growing up in an extremely small community, the outside world, even Great Falls, seemed huge.  But when it came time to head to college, it was one of the most stressful times I had experienced.

However, thanks to a well prepared and college experienced father, most of the worry was more about what to grab from my room.  And there are some definite "must haves" that a student, especially a freshmen student must have to begin the journey to adulthood.  And learning to live without Mom or Dad.

Simple Checklist for Parents of Kids Heading to College in Montana

Depending on what your student might be pursuing in the college classroom, there may be certain things that a profession might need.  For myself, attending broadcasting school meant having a nice set of headphones and stacks of cassette tapes.  Simple thing, but you might want to check for specific tools before that call comes the first week after dropping your kid off.

And sure, there are the normal items that should already be on a checklist to begin with.  Toothpaste, toothbrush and other toiletries; pens, pencils, highlighters, notepads and a good backpack are also great to send students off with.

As a student heading for the broadcast field, and a time before computers had taken over all of the world's classrooms, one of the items my father sent me off with was an old school typewriter.  Really old school.  I still have it nearly 40 years later.
