If you’ve ever waited for answers that never came, you know how heavy that silence can feel.

For the family of Ronald Lander, that silence lasted nearly five years.

Lander had been listed with the Montana Missing Persons Clearinghouse after his last known contact on April 15, 2021. During that time, his loved ones were left in limbo, holding onto hope while living with the painful unknown.

Found After Five Years: But the Questions Aren’t Over

That long wait came to a heartbreaking end on March 19, when Lander’s remains were discovered in the backyard of a South Side property in Billings. Authorities say the cause and manner of his death remain undetermined, so while his family finally has something to hold onto, a layer of uncertainty still lingers.

A Family Already Stretched Thin, Now Facing One More Thing

Now, his family is facing something most of us never think about until we’re in it: the responsibility of saying goodbye. In a message shared through a GoFundMe, Della Lander explained that her husband has been named next of kin, putting the weight of final arrangements squarely on their shoulders. And it’s not just a logistical burden. Their family has already been carrying so much, including raising Lander’s youngest child, now 17 years old, who is also trying to process this loss.

After Years of Uncertainty, They Just Want to Say Goodbye

After years of not knowing where he was, his family now wants to do one simple, meaningful thing: lay him to rest with dignity. But the cost of cremation and end-of-life services has created a financial burden they weren’t prepared for. They’re asking for help through this GoFundMe to give Ronald Lander a peaceful goodbye, the kind that no family should have to fundraise for.

Even a Share Can Mean Something

Not everyone can donate, and that’s okay. But if this story stayed with you, even sharing their fundraiser could make a real difference. This is a family that spent years wondering, and is now just trying to find a little peace. Sometimes the most human thing we can do is show up for someone in their hardest moment, even from a distance.
